Terrazzo, sometimes called "Venetian mosaic," is made from stone chippings (i.e. granite/marble) laid in a concrete or resin mixture that
hardens into an extremely durable floor. The price of the materials makes Terrazzo makes it one of the most expensive types of hard flooring out there, and it
also needs professional installation, adding to the cost. Despite the price, Terrazzo has become increasingly
popular in ultra-modern settings (i.e. converted warehouses/lofts). But is it right for you? Let's look at the pros and cons:
Advantages of Terrazzo
- It makes for a very durable floor
- It's easy to maintain.
- Terrazzo floors offer a beautiful contemporary look.
- It works well in high-traffic areas like halls, foyers, kitchens, and living
rooms.
Disadvantages of Terrazzo
- Expensive
- Terrazzo is cold underfoot and, because it has no cushioning, can be hard to
stand on for long periods of time.
- It doesn't have any sound absorption properties.
