Open Grain vs. Closed Grain Woods

When you're selecting the hardwood flooring of your dreams, you may be asked whether you prefer an open grain or a closed grain. If you're like me (the first time I heard the terms), you may look at the dealer with a blank expression on your face, while you secretly wonder: grain? Isn't that something found in bread? Here's what you need to know about grains, at least insofar as hardwoods are concerned.

Open Grains: Woods with open grains are more stable, meaning they will resist deterioration over time, but they are not as hard.

Closed Grains: Woods with closed grains are harder, meaning they will resist dents and dings well, but they are not as stable.

Clear as mud now?  Good, go forth and grain it up!
