Douglas Fir Flooring

Since Douglas fir is so ubuiquitous out here in the Pacific Northwest, I was curious to find out what kind of flooring material it made. With the help of a couple of books, I found out it's softer than other hardwoods, so if you're considering using it, it should only be in low traffic rooms. It has a clear, vertical grain with great color, though, ranging from pale yellow to light red. One book mentioned that it often becomes warmer when exposed to sunlight, rather than fading like many other woods.

Fir was indeed used a lot for flooring during the "civilizing" of the Pacific Northwest, which means it's pretty easy to find reclaimed fir now (salvaged from old buildings), if you like the idea of helping the environment by reusing materials instead of buying new.
