Custom-built Houseboats

custom-built-houseboat-kitchen.jpgOwning your own houseboat means having 360 degree waterfront views. For the ultimate in luxury, you can have one custom-designed and built to your specifications. You can get everything from oak cabinets to stainless steel appliances, just as with a home on land. Twin Anchors Marine is one company that specializes in custom boats. Though based in the northwest, they've delivered houseboats as far south as Texas and as far east as the Atlantic Coast. If you're thinking of buying a boat of your own, they have floorplans and pictures you can browse on their site.

Becker JetVan

becker-jetvan.jpgThis isn't your parents' RV. Actually, the Becker JetVan isn't an RV at all. It's a Dodge Sprinter passenger van with just a few modifications. Examples include leather seats with "electrically deployed" leg rests, two wide-screen TVs (one for the front of the cabin and one for the rear), satellite phone, laptop docking station, high-speed Internet connection, and enhanced LED lighting. Designed to be the land equivalent of an executive jet, it might not be your first choice for a camping trip (although I wouldn't mind wheeling up to the RV park in one), but if you've got business to conduct on the road and can shrug off the $250,000 price tag, you'll want to check out the deluxe van.

luxury-rv.jpgIt's not too early to start shopping for next year's motorhome. The 2006 model of the Country Coach Affinity is out, and at a $700,000+ price tag, you better believe it's got some snazzy options. This luxury RV is 45 feet long (don't ask about the gas mileage) with slideouts that give it extra room when you stop for the night. Some of the features are: washer and dryer, 32" LCD TV, In Motion Satellite, GPS, and dishwasher.

Timeshares for RVs?

Maybe you like the idea of taking off in a new luxury model RV, but aren't keen on the idea of spending 10s or even 100s of thousands on a rig you might only use for a couple weeks a year. Well, it shouldn't be any surprise that someone came up with a timeshare sort of deal with RVs. American Quarter Coach is one such company. You can buy either a 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 share of a "luxury motor coach." The company takes care of the maintenance, insurance, cleanup, storage, and delivery. That means no immitating the tacky neighbors who leave their RV parked on the street year around. If you're looking for a no-hassle RV experience, it may be something to consider.

Houseboat Buying Information

If you like houses with views of the water, it's hard to beat living on the water in a houseboat. Buying a houseboat is a little different (ok, a lot different) than buying a house, though. Some of the things you have to consider are mooring fees, insurance, national titles and winterization. If you're buying a used houseboat, you'll need to have a marine survey done before you can secure a loan.

To get an idea of what all is involved, I recommend the following articles from Houseboat Magazine:

An RV for the Next Generation

Today's RVs are taking on the luxuries of today's houses. Technology is drastically changing what the field offers. Whatever your idea of an RV is, you've probably always assumed they're just for land... Think again. The Terra Wind, an "amphibious motorcoach," is an RV that can go on land and in the water.
