Zinc Countertops in the Kitchen
If you like the look of metal countertops, but you're not sure about the cold anti-septic aura stainless steel can evoke, you could take a look at zinc. This metal is softer than stainless steel and will bear the marks and scratches of frequent use, but some people like that feeling of character and will even distress their countertops on purpose. Zinc also develops a lovely patina over time. However it is possible to get a clean, polished look that doesn't change over time by using a clear coat zinc finish.
As far as maintenance and cleaning goes, warm water and mild detergents are all it takes to keep your countertops looking nice (harsh abrasive should be avoided). Since zinc oxide naturally inhibits the growth of mold and mildew, it's a smart choice for food preparation areas.
