Swinging Garage Doors
If you have an old historic home, nothing screams 21st century like garage doors that roll or flip up. If you want the authentic feel of an old carriage house for your garage, you could try installing swinging doors that part in the middle and open outward. These doors, which are mated in pairs and hinged on the sides, were especially common from 1900 on. They often had paneled frames and were reinforced with characteristic diagonal braces to prevent sagging. Windows along the tops of the doors let light into the carriage house.
Today you can find companies that offer this style with roll up doors (so they are one piece and just look like hinged carriage doors), or you can visit Real Carriage Doors, a company that crafts doors that actually swing out. Don't worry... a garage door opener still works to open them, so you don't have to get out of your car in the rain to do it yourself.
