Kitchen Islands
Kitchen islands are very desirable for the extra counterspace, extra seating, and sometimes extra appliances (grill tops, sinks, etc) they offer. However, they aren't practical for smaller kitchens. You don't want to add a permanent fixture that is going to make your aisles crowded or opening cupboards and drawers difficult.
One option you have if you like the idea of islands but don't have much extra room in your kitchen is to go with a portable island or serving cart. Most of these are on wheels which makes them easy to move; many models have locks so the wheels can be locked in place as well. By shopping online, you can see many of the available styles and features all at once, and Internet sellers frequently are able to discount their products since they don't have to pay for maintaining a store.
