Thinking Ahead to the Christmas Holiday
While fake Christmas trees are convenient and easy to setup year after year, they are not an eco-friendly option for the holiday. The main reason why they are not a green alternative is because they are made from plastic, specifically polyvinyl chloride (PVC). There is a lot of pollution caused from manufacturing this type of plastic, and it is challenging to recycle. Another problem with PVC is that it often contains lead, and a lead-containing Christmas tree is not something you want to have in your home around your children and pets.
Farmed Christmas trees are one of the best options to make your holiday eco-friendly, because they are a renewable resource. These trees are grown specifically for the holiday, so while they are maturing they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. One mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. When the holiday is over, you can have your tree recycled into mulch. Sometimes your local recycling center will provide this service, or you can check at your local park to donate it or use it for your own yard.
