Tame an Explosive Teen Closet

MarinaHanes ~ 7 August 2009

Has your teenager’s closet exploded out onto the rest of the house? Maybe you find purses, shoes, socks, etc. all the way downstairs in the living room as if this is their final resting place. To prevent your kids from cluttering up your home, try taming their closet.

If all that your teen has in his/her closet is a single bowed rod and shelf, this is probably why belongings never get put away. After removing outgrown and out-of-style clothes, take measurements of the closet and head to a home organizing store to buy some inexpensive storage units.

Start with a coated-wire system and mount two rods at different heights. Underneath the higher rod, place a wire or plastic drawer unit for sweaters, tops and accessories. A laundry basket in the middle of the closet can keep dirty clothes all together. If your teen already has a shoe collection, setup a wooden cubby so each pair has a place. For more storage, install shelving above the lower rod.
