Create a Landscape Base Map

MarinaHanes ~ 21 July 2009

When designing the landscaping for your home or backyard garden, a base map can help guide you through the process. Sometimes it’s when you see everything complete do you realize that certain plants were not such a good idea. Instead of making expensive mistakes and having to remove large shrubs and trees, create a base map of your design.

First, acquire a plat or property survey prepared by a surveyor. When you purchased your home, you should have received one of these. A plat map will show the boundaries of your yard as well as the position of your house, garage and easements. You can obtain a copy of your plat from the tax assessor’s office too.

Second, make several copies of your plat map so you can sketch out various types of landscape ideas. Use the map’s legend to draw everything to scale. As you’re drawing your landscaping, take the sun and shade patterns of the seasons into account. Also, consider creating multiple levels that lead up to your front door, because you can incorporate different types of plants for dramatic effect.

We learned this the hard way after a few gardening exercises. If you don’t plan it all out, it won’t flow together. We’re in the process of doing our side yard, which is a pretty big space and I keep drawing and redrawing, but at least it’s on paper and I’m not moving the plants around — yet! We’re trying to add as much fragrance as we can and found a lot of good tips online. Here’s one– http://www.oldhouseweb.com/gardening/Detailed/816.shtml
