Modular Trellises for Vertical Gardening

Lindsay ~ 8 February 2009

Trellises are useful for “vertical gardening,” which is when you want to train plants to grow up instead of all over the ground in a tangled mess. This can be very helpful when you’re gardening on a small city lot where there isn’t a lot of ground space.

Trellises can be useful for ornamental plants but also for fruit and vegetable gardens.

You’ve probably seen tomatoes, raspberries, and grapes growing on trellises, but you can also train squash (even pumpkins), peas, and beans to grow up. Not only does this save space, but it can help reduce rot and control diseases, since it improves the airflow.

These modular trellises from Smith & Hawken are more expensive than what you could make by hand, but they look study and the modular aspect means you can always buy more of the same to add on in the future. Also, since they’re made from durable 4mm wire (powder-coated to withstand weathering), they should last a lot longer than wood.

The basic modular trellis structure is $369, and then you can add on various sized pieces if you want to increase square footage.
