CompuCarve Computer-Controlled Router, a Tool for Woodworkers

Lindsay ~ 7 February 2009

If woodworking is your hobby, and you get excited by the idea of carving three-dimensional wood designs with the aid of computer technology, then here’s a tool for your shop:

The CompuCarve is a computer-controlled router that can etch designs in five minutes flat. The easy-to-use interface “allows a novice to make a complete project without a shop full of tools.”

In addition to creating designs, the woodworking tool can perform other functions such as ripping, cross cutting, mitering, contouring, jointing and routing. It can work with “most soft materials, including wood, plastics (polycarbonate or cast acrylic) and certain types of high density foam.”

You can choose from a library of pre-programmed patterns or design your own decorative reliefs and upload them to the tool’s computerized brain.

The CompuCarve costs $2,000 at Sears though so you better be willing to fork over some cash for this hobby tool. (Maybe you can sell some of your woodworking masterpieces on Etsy and call it a business write off!)

I’ve had my eye on one of these machines for a while. I’ve been practically drooling over various youtube videos and all the finished pieces that I’ve seen on the CarveWright forum..

My tax return can’t come quick enough.
