Your Dream Deck Could be Made from… Rice

Lindsay ~ 22 October 2008

Composite decking is nothing new, but composite decking made from rice? You might not have come across that before (I know I hadn’t).

Mcfarland Cascade offers “Terratec Naturals,” a decking made with rice hulls and recycled plastics. The composite contains no preservatives or biocides, so if you’re looking for a green deck option, this may be worth considering.

According to the company, the rice hull formulation makes for dense, hard, and durable deck boards that naturally resist moisture, mold, stains, and insects. Also, the material is supposed to be more tolerant to the sun’s UV rays than wood, so your deck won’t fade as the seasons pass.

If you’re worried the rice-based decking will look funky, then be reassured that the boards feature a realistic embossed wood grain texture.

The company offers two types of boards: traditional deck boards that install with screws through the surface and “architectural” boards, which feature hidden “Quick Clip” fasteners.
