Straw Bale Fence Offers Privacy & Blocks out Noise

9 September 2008

A fence is the traditional way to gain privacy from one’s neighbors (though this can also be achieved by planting bamboo, trees, or high-growing shrubbery) and many materials can also serve to block out street noise, but few have better noise-damping qualities than a wall of straw bales.

A straw bale fence is also flexible, meaning it can curve around trees and structures without laborious cutting. In addition straw is a natural, easily replenished material, so it’s great for the eco-conscious homeowner. Depending on where you live and the availability of straw, it may be a more affordable fence material than wood or vinyl too.

I wondered about the flammability factor myself and looked at a couple of sites for more information, but apparently because straw bales are so densely packed they’re not as incendiary as you might think (not like loose straw). So a straw bale wall or fence probably isn’t going to be any more susceptible to fire than wood (and may even be less so).
