Garden Pest Control Goes High Tech with Ultrasonic Deer Repeller

8 September 2008

Though pest control isn’t fun stuff to talk about, it’s a big part of gardening. There are all kinds of pests you may have to fend off, and in a rural area, that can include intruders as big as deer.

Today there are some pretty high-tech options out there. I can’t vouch for how well any of them work, but if you’re looking for something humane to try, you might want to look into some of these motion-detecting systems that emit ultrasonic frequencies to drive away animals, including deer.

Deerbusters sells the one shown here and claims that unlike “most ultrasonic devices our system has been tested and designed to startle animals but doesn’t let the animal become used to the sound.” The sound is outside the range of human hearing but will annoy animals. One device can cover up to 4,000 feet.

Cost = $65.
