Electric Leaf Shredder Makes Mulching Easy and Efficient

6 September 2008

With summer on the wane, it won’t be long before leaves start falling from trees and you need to decide how to take care of the ones burying your yard. For those who like to garden, turning leaves into mulch is a smart choice, and it’s easy to do with an electric leaf shredder.

Why shred leaves?

The best mulches are porous enough to allow air and water to penetrate the soil, which promotes plant health (especially if you’re going to reuse the mulch in the spring). Today’s mulched leaves become tomorrow’s nutrient-rich compost.

Any old leaf shredder will do the job (you can even tear up those leaves just by running your lawn mower over them repeatedly), but one that can handle twigs and small branches is nice, since those things all tend to get raked up together.

This 14 Amp Electric Shredder & Chipper from the Gardeners’ Supply Company looks like it would do the job. It mulches those leaves, and it can also chip branches up to 1.5″ in diameter.

The leaf tool costs $299:
