Solid Wood Eucalyptus Flooring, Beautiful and Durable

Lindsay ~ 31 August 2008

Once you’ve decided on hardwood floors, there are many species to consider. While they’re all arguably handsome, each offers different looks, and there’s a lot of variation along the spectrum from light to dark.

This solid wood eucalyptus flooring is a nice middle ground and offers a wonderful richness.

The stairs here were done with “Vida Grandis flooring” from the Environmental Home Center. The wood is made from Eucalyptus Grand, which is grown in the Northeast province of Corrientes, Argentina. It’s sourced from plantations certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The eucalyptus species has a Janka Scale rating of 1150, which makes it slightly harder than Teak and therefore a great choice for a durable hardwood floor.

Be careful using this type of product, because it is a vapor barrier and depending on where you live, if you put a vapor barrier in the wrong place you will get condensation. Condensation can cause a variety of problems, from mold to rot, so be sure to do your homework before installing this.

On the flip side, you could use a perforated radiant barrier (http://www.raflect.com) in addition to some typical bat insulation. This will give you energy savings in the winter and in the summer as the heat is always reflected away from the radiant barrier.
