Beyond the Bean Bag–the Nook Lounge Chair

3 July 2008

I’m more of a lounger than a sit-right-and-properer, so I dig chairs that sort of defy the standard and encourage, well, lounging. I had a bean bag long after I was supposed to give such things up, and I could totally see grabbing a book and curling up in the Nook.

This chair (yeah, I’m going to go ahead and call it a chair, though it doesn’t quite fit the usual image) is the work of designer Philippe Malouin:

The nook lounger is built in a similar way to baby booties. Using a crochet technique to build the piece. But instead of using a crochet, I used my arm and crocheted the seat to shape using a continuous cotton tube filled with recycled cotton fibres. The nook is a basket that can be morphed into a desired shape to use at will. Also, understanding the technique, one can undo the nook to rebuild a different structure.”

Much more interesting than a bean bag, doncha think?
