Wool Area Rugs Made from Recycled Sweaters

22 January 2008

Rugs come in all shapes and sizes–and materials. If you’re looking for eco-friendly floor coverings, you might want to choose a rug made from recycled materials.

For example, take a peep at these wool area rugs made from recycled sweaters.

They’re fashioned in “potholder” style: “This method actually takes recycled wool sweaters which are cleaned, softened and cut into strips, then woven by hand on giant frame looms.”

The resulting rug is supposed to be colorful (you can choose from a variety of colors), sturdy, and long-lasting. For the eco-conscious, they are also chemical-free, so know there’s nothing harmful underfoot as you play on them with your kids.

Sizes start in the doormat category at 1.75′ x 2.5′ and go all the way up to 10′ x 14′.

The rugs are made to order and prices start at $75 from Abundant Earth.

If you really want a genuine wool rug for your family and home, first make sure it is made of 100% wool, not some artificial wool imitating fibers. Pay attention to the manufacturer – if it is a reputable company, the size of the carpet and the price corresponding to that size.
