Residential Outdoor Sauna, Anyone?

9 December 2007

Now that snow is flying in many parts of the country and the temperature outside reads cold, you may be realizing your backyard is missing something…

Yes, that’s right: you’ve forgotten the outdoor sauna.

I’m more of a hot tub person myself, but I can’t deny the literature out there that preaches the health benefits of saunas. Aside from that, it’s fun to get hot, and then streak barefoot and bare-bodied around the snow-filled yard (or so I’ve heard).

There are quite a few companies out there that build cozy little indoor and outdoor saunas for residential use. In many cases they come fully assembled (or close to), so installation isn’t anything traumatic.

The barrel sauna shown here is from Callaway Woodworks. I like the optional front porch and bench where you can sit and cool off without getting rained on if the weather is poor. You can get a pre-constructed sauna from the company or order a custom one. Prices start around $4,500.
