Eco-friendly Furniture Made from Reclaimed Barn Wood

Lindsay ~ 13 November 2007

Wood furniture is beautiful, but if you’re passionate about caring for the environment, you may feel a little guilty buying pieces made from trees. Well, one way to get guilt-free furniture is to buy from companies that use reclaimed wood.

This is when the boards are taken from old barns, school houses, houses, etc. and given new life by being recycled into modern pieces of furniture. No new trees need to be cut down, but the aged wood from decades past is still beautiful (some argue it’s even better looking than the new stuff from young “tree farm” trees).

An example is this handsome stained glass hutch, which was made from reclaimed barn wood:

“Large Hutch featuring antique English stained Glass, 19” wide pine top, foot worn floorboard from centuries of farmer’s footsteps, and at a closer glance, claw marks from a 19th century critter. Could be, might be, possibly….a bear!”

Now how many of your suburban neighbors can claim to have furniture that’s been maimed by a bear at some point in its life? Not too many, I’ll bet.

This piece is $3,500 from Vermont Woods Studios.

Great looking beds but I’m shopping for metal frame dog beds. The best one I’ve seen are on “http://www.petpeoplefurniture.com/PetBeds.html”.

Awesome beds priced right too – let me know if anyone else knows of other great sites for metal framed dog beds.

That dog bed looks really interesting. How much does that cost? Where can I buy one?

This hutch is available in our reclaimed barnwood furniture collection.
