Cloud Bed Offers a Cozy Sleeping Cocoon
Some people prefer open spaces and won’t even close the door when they go to sleep at night, but lots of us like cozy little nooks for slumbering. Maybe our instincts remember times when saber tooth tigers were likely to chance upon us in our sleep, so we like to feel protected. I’m not sure this cloud bed from Courtney Skott would keep out the tigers, but it does have its roots in history.
The Cloud Bed “is inspired by Ming Dynasty-era Chinese alcove beds, and the idea of the bed as a ‘room within a room.’” The clouds themselves are a modern addition: “The overall form is pierced with a pattern derived from digital photographs of clouds taken on a trip to Patagonia. The cloud motif refers both to the Western association of clouds with sleep and dreams, and the Chinese symbology of clouds as a harbinger of rain and fertility.”
While I don’t know how much all that would influence my decision to purchase the bed, I must admit the cloud holes make interesting shadows when light passes through.
