Wood Roof, Anyone?

Lindsay ~ 17 August 2007

Though many prefer the maintenance-free durability of a metal roof or the affordability of composite shingles, it’s hard to beat the beauty of a wood roof.

Woof roofs come in two types: shingles and shakes.

Shingles are cut to a specific size and smooth-finished. Shakes are irregular and have a rougher texture. For both shingles and shakes, the most common wood roof material is cedar.

Wood is handsome and gives a natural look to a home, but it does have its downsides. It’s more expensive than composite shingles, and it does require more work to maintain and protect it from the elements. You also need to check with your local ordinances, because in some areas wood roofs are not allowed due to threats of wild fires.
