If you’re remodeling your kitchen and want to create an upscale look, it’s hard to beat the sleek, dark, and ruggedly handsome look of slate tiles.

Here Brazilian slate field tiles of differing hues are used to make a striking backsplash. The countertop shown below is also made from slate, a honed slab of Brazilian Grey.

Slate is known for durability and ease of maintenance, and perhaps more important (in my book of messy cooking anyway), the natural texture and dark color do a nice job hiding grease and spatters that tend to show up on lighter ceramic tiles.
