Need a New Roof? Try Thatch

Lindsay ~ 16 January 2007

If a thatched roof sounds like something from a long-past era, you’re right, but believe it or not, they’re still being used today on brand new houses. They can be perfect if you’re building a home using a historic style. But how sturdy is thatch, you may wonder.

According to McGhee & Co. Roof Thatchers, a company that specializes in this material, water reed thatch roofs have a life expectancy in excess of 60 years. That’s not bad when you consider how many materials only last about 20 years.

The company is headed by Colin McGhee, a Master Thatcher who apprenticed in England for 5 years before heading out to work on his own. He does everything from private residences and public structures to playhouses, doghouses, and even birdhouses.
