Portable Backyard Ice Skating Rink
If you have fond memories of skating around the frozen pond out back when you were a kid, this portable outdoor ice skating rink could be a fun way to share that experience with your children (let’s face it; thanks to urban sprawl and subdivisions, there just aren’t as many ponds around these days). Any time the temperature is below freezing, you can set this baby up. It takes 2-3 days for the ice to solidify so you can skate on it, but once it’s ready you can practice everything from figure skating to ice hockey (there are even lines to delineate a hockey arena).
The skating rink is available from Hammacher Shclemmer, and they promise it’s easy to install (no tools required). It’s supposed to be able to accommodate yards that aren’t perfectly flat, and it comes in sizes ranging from 15-feet to 37-feet. Prices start around $200 (a lot cheaper than digging and maintaining a real pond in your backyard).
