Refinishing a Cracked Concrete Driveway Saves You Money

Lindsay ~ 20 November 2006

It seems inevitable: cracks in your concrete driveway. Over time roots emerge, ground settles, and don’t forget those earthquakes if you live in California. Cracked concrete is unattractive, but replacing your whole driveway is an expensive home improvement. Is there another option?

If the surface of the driveway is damaged, but the concrete is still structurally sound, you can save money by resurfacing it instead of replacing it. To do this, you’ll need to buy a sand-mix concrete or a masonry product that is specifically designed for resurfacing. The new layer will bond best to the old layer if it is packed down. To achieve this, use a dry, stiff mixture and compact it with a shovel.
