If you’ve got a front door that’s low to the ground, and there’s not really room to build a grand entryway leading up to it, you could still add some drama with a unique step. In this case, a half millstone (think of the big stones that did the grinding in old-fashioned flour mills) from Maine Millstones makes for an interesting doorstep.

The company makes millstone steps out of hand-carved granite, and they age the pieces so they look like they came from genuine centuries-old mills. Prices start at $925 for a 36″ x 18″ x 7″ step and go all the way up to $36″ x 18″ x 7″ for a 72″ x 36″ x 7″ step. You’ll likely need the help of a professional to install these millstones, however, since the smallest one weighs in at 320 pounds (you didn’t think solid granite was light now, did you?). At that weight, you certainly don’t need to worry about anyone making off with your step when you’re not looking.
