Translucent Roofs Add More Natural Light

26 August 2006

You’ve heard of skylights of course, but how about translucent roofs that let in a whole lot of natural light? Centerpoint Translucent Systems builds opaque windows that are strong enough to be used as roofing. It does look like you need a bump-out or bay for it to work, so if you’re planning a remodel that increases the footprint of your house, this may be worth considering. If you’re wondering how sturdy a window for a roof would be, the company says their work is rated for hurricane zones. The frame is made from extruded aluminum wrapped in maintenance-free vinyl, and the panels are made from polycarbonate and filled with “Nanogel” (sounds science fictiony, doesn’t it?). The roof comes with a 10 year warranty.
