Pellet Stoves for Heating the House

Lindsay ~ 25 August 2006

With autumn around the corner, you might be thinking of ways you’re going to heat the house this winter–without spending a fortune. In the last couple years, pellet stoves have made a resurgence in popularity, since the cost of oil has risen so much. Unlike with wood stoves, pellet stoves are attached to a hopper that automatically lets fuel into the firebox at appropriate intervals to keep the fire burning and the temperature even. That means no having to lug in firewood and restart the fire in the cold of morning. Pellets also come in bags that are easier to handle than bulky and uneven logs. You basically just open the bag and dump a load into the hopper. The prices for stoves start around $1,200, and the pellets themselves cost about $130 to $200 per ton.
