“Clean Energy Tracker” Makes Using Renewable Energy Easy

Lindsay ~ 16 August 2006

As long as you’re shopping for new products, gizmos, and furnishings to improve your home, why not contribute to an organization that wants to fight global warming by tapping into renewable energy resources? No, you don’t have to spend vast sums of money. It’s all free. All you do is make purchases you were going to make anyway from retailers that contribute a percentage of the sale to the OurEnergy organization. There are over 700 retailers already participating, but you don’t need to worry about tracking them yourself. The company has created a Clean Energy Tracker that does everything for you.

When you sign up on their web site (still free), you can download the program, which then records the merchant contributions based on the purchases you make from participating companies. Your purchase history is available online and shows you exactly how much clean renewable energy generation has been created because of your efforts. For every $2.50 that is contributed by retailers you support, the company generates 100 kilowatt-hours of clean wind energy. They also generate 100 kWh just for signing up and joining the program.

It sounds like a pretty good deal to me. At any rate, it’s easier than installing one of those big ol’ wind turbines in your backyard and hoping for a stiff breeze.
