Refacing Kitchen Cabinets Can Save You Money

13 July 2006

When you dream of remodeling your kitchen, you fantasize about granite countertops and brand new cabinets. And then you realize how much all that will cost. Well, if you’re remodeling on a budget, choosing to reface the kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them can save you money. Refacing can work well if you want to match your cabinets to new countertops or give tired, but otherwise sturdy, cabinets a long-term face lift. It’s basically a middle-of-the-road option, in between painting and installing all new cabinets.

During the refacing process, you remove the doors and cover the existing cabinets with new skins (popular materials are wood veneers or colored laminates). Next, new doors, drawer faces, and hardware are attached. The installation can be completed in a few days, and if you’re handy may even be possible as a do-it-yourself project. The price will run you around $150-$300 per door opening if you have someone else do it.
