Between-the-studs Recessed Cabinets Provide Extra Storage

17 February 2006

Here’s a neat idea if you need more storage, but you’re strapped for space. The In Wall Cabinets company’s recessed cabinets are designed to fit between the studs of a 2×4 wall. They can be used anywhere there’s no room for a traditional freestanding cabinet. Some of the company’s offerings include a coat rack with umbrella storage, a display cabinet for your knickknacks, a liquor bar or wine storage unit, and a billiards cue cabinet. Smaller versions include CD racks, medicine cabinets, and dart board closets. Available with or without doors, the solid oak or maple cabinets can either be unfinished or come in one of five stained finishes. To install, you cut out an opening in your wallboard between the existing studs, then fasten the cabinet into it. Of course, you’ll want to make sure there isn’t plumbing or electrical wires running through the wall in that spot first. Prices for the recessed cabinets run from $150 to $490, depending on size, finish, and options.
