Battery-powered Leaf Blower

Lindsay ~ 10 October 2005

‘Tis the season of leaf-strewn lawns. Leaf blowers are favorites among homeowners because they let you tuck all your leaves into a neat pile for the yard waste bin. Electric or gasoline-powered leaf blowers can be a pain though. With the price of gas this year, who wants to dump that money into a leaf blower? And with electric, you’ve got to worry about tangling up the cord. So, why not try a battery-powered, cordless blower? There are a number of models available for less than $100 such as the BL18 Cordless Leaf Blower which retails for $70 and comes with 2 x 18 volt batteries and a 1-hour charger.

We ended up ordering this cordless leaf blower from Amazon, and it has worked surprisingly well for us this fall. We weren’t sure a battery-powered model would have enough suck, but it’s worked well. It’s a great addition to the old tool arsenal.

I’m thinking about buying a battery powered leaf blower. Does anyone have one? How did it work this fall? Are they powerful enough to get the job done or is gas better? I hate the electric ones because of the cord but the gas ones are so noisy too. Battery run would be great if it worked well enough. Thoughts?

I have Westwood Cordless 18Volt Blower model No OA/410. After the first charge from new, 5 hours, and fitment to the blower it worked fine,
I put it away in my shed and later in the day went into my shed to do some work. After a while I heard a noise like dripping water and looking around observed smoke coming from the blower. I gathered it up and took it outside and removed the battery. After allowing it to cool I unscrewed the top plate which by now had some molten area’s that were associated with some overheated cells.
Obviously some short circuiting had taken place. Has anyone had a similiar experience which could have had serious consequences if I had not been present at the time.
There is no manufacturing name or other detail on the battery which I find very strange neither can I find a web site that offers any information on the blower product.
I bought it new from a local shop that deals in many similiar products. It was boxed in an official Westwoods box with this noname battery and charger.
Any clues as to the fault or other information on the product.
